Getting Your Monie$ Worth – Part I: Printer-Friendly graphics (Spring 2008)

by Pattie Stone, Principal, pattiedesign (multimedia designers)

This is Part I of a new ongoing series designed to help you save money and, in this case, avoid paying extra dollars to ‘recreate’ what already has been done before.

Scenario…

A designer is hired to design printed materials (ads, brochures, etc.). They ask the client to email them with their electronic logo and any illustrations or photos they’d like included. After the designer reviews the images, the client is very disappointed to find out that their logos and/or images are not suitable for the print medium because they are low resolution and in print will appear ‘blurry.’ The solution? ‘Recreate or replace them,’ the designer replies.

How could this scenario have been avoided?

Make sure you get a high resolution (minimum 300 dpi) .eps version of your logo and/or illustrations from your designer. Also, when purchasing royalty-free stock photos or images, or if you are taking the photos yourself, either get an .eps version (minimum 300 dpi) or a high-resolution jpeg image. These simple steps will “Get Your Monie$ Worth” the first time around.
